FSSAI licence in Chennai.
The fees and the tiers are national. What changes in Chennai is who administers your file, which trade routes you touch, and the mistakes that are common in the businesses around you.
Tamil Nadu administers the licence. FSSAI writes the rules.
Licensing is a state subject under the Act. In Tamil Nadu it runs through the Commissioner of Food Safety — in practice, the Food Safety Department, Tamil Nadu — with Registration granted by the Designated Officer for your area and State Licences by the state licensing authority. A Central Licence is issued by FSSAI’s regional office.
Confirm the office that covers your ward with the Designated Officer before filing — jurisdictions inside a city change.
Chennai in practice
Chennai’s regulatory centre of gravity is trade. Exporters of seafood, spices and processed food deal with FSSAI alongside APEDA, MPEDA and the Export Inspection Council, and importers clearing at Chennai port or the air cargo complex need a Central Licence in place before the consignment sails.
- Every premises needs its own licence — a second outlet is a second file, not an amendment
- Consignments moving through Chennai port and air cargo — import and export files carry their own periods and documents
- Operating in two or more states adds a head-office Central Licence on top of the state licences
Three things that decide how this one goes.

Export files run on two clocks. FSSAI decides whether the food and the label are lawful; the buyer’s country decides what certificate must travel with it. Test reports from an NABL-accredited, FSSAI-notified laboratory are what connect the two, and they take longer to arrange than most first-time exporters expect.
- Exporter is a Central kind of business at any turnover
- APEDA, MPEDA and the Export Inspection Council sit alongside FSSAI — not instead of it
- Import consignments have a last-arrival date tied to remaining shelf life

FSSAI licensing in Chennai — quick answers
Do I need an FSSAI licence to export food from Chennai?
Yes — an exporter takes a Central Licence at any turnover, and the product still has to meet Indian standards as well as the buyer country’s requirements.
Who handles licensing in Tamil Nadu?
The Food Safety Department, Tamil Nadu, under the Commissioner of Food Safety, with Central Licences issued by FSSAI’s regional office.
How long does an FSSAI licence take in Chennai?
Registration is often granted within a few working days. A State or Central Licence is scrutinised and may be inspected, so plan for a few weeks — and longer if the officer raises a query. Most delays we see are document problems that could have been fixed before filing.
Is the government fee different from state to state?
No. ₹100 a year for Registration, ₹5,000 for a State Licence and ₹7,500 for a Central Licence are national. What varies is which office handles your file and how quickly it moves.
