Label review

Label review, before the print run.

Fifteen mandatory elements, two sets of size rules and a claims regulation that FSSAI enforces letter by letter. We check every SKU before the artwork goes to the printer — so the first reader of your label isn’t a Food Safety Officer.

What we check

Presence is the first test. Size, place and wording are the second.

  • All fifteen mandatory elements under regulation 5, and the declarations Schedule II triggers for your ingredients
  • Font heights and veg-mark size for your panel area, and Legal Metrology sizes for net quantity, MRP and dates
  • Allergens declared as a separate “Contains …” line that names the actual cereal or nut
  • Every claim on the front — “natural”, “healthy”, “high protein”, “no added sugar”, “100%” — against the Advertising & Claims Regulations
  • Pictures and product names, which FSSAI reads as claims too

Free self-check

Hold your pack. Tick what’s on it.

A two-minute presence check against regulation 5. It won’t catch sizes or claims — that’s the review — but it catches the misses that get packs written up.

From FSSAI’s own notices

What actually gets labels written up.

Patterns from enforcement notices issued in 2025 and 2026. None of these packs had a missing element — the problem was what the front said.

A product name is a claim.

Five of six findings in one notice were about words on the front — “International Italian” on a product made in India.

A picture is a declaration.

A drawing of cashews and ghee was cited against an ingredient list showing ghee at 0.01% and cashew at 0.85%.

Emphasis alone can be the defect.

“Made with Jaggery” in large type was misleading because the ingredients listed jaggery and sugar.

“100%” is out.

FSSAI’s advisory of 28.05.2025 asks businesses to stop using “100%” on labels and in advertising.

Numbers a label has to meet

The figures behind the review.

2,000 kcal

The RDA basis for %RDA on the nutrition panel — with 67 g fat, 22 g saturated fat, 2 g trans fat, 50 g added sugar, 2,000 mg sodium.

40%

Minimum principal display panel for a rectangular or cylindrical pack — 20% of total surface for other shapes.

100 cm²

At or under this pack surface area, some elements move to the multi-unit outer pack. Not all of them.

Two rulebooks

FSSAI sizes most elements by panel area. Legal Metrology sizes net quantity, MRP and dates by net quantity. A label must satisfy both.

FAQ

Label review questions

How is a label review priced?

A fixed fee per SKU, quoted before we start. Variants that share artwork and differ only in flavour or pack size are priced together.

What do I get back?

Your artwork marked up element by element, and a written note of every finding with the regulation behind it and the fix. Nothing is marked “compliant” that we haven’t checked.

Can I fix a label with a sticker?

Generally not for stock already printed — FSSAI’s permission to use old packaging covers only a changed name, address or licence number. For imports, five specific elements can be stickered at the port. Everything else needs reprinting.

Do you check front-of-pack claims?

Yes — that is where most enforcement action lands. We check claims against the Advertising & Claims Regulations 2018 and FSSAI’s advisories, including the May 2025 advisory against “100%”.
