FSSAI licence for selling food online.
If you sell food on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Blinkit or Zepto, you need your own FSSAI registration or licence, and the platform must display it on your listing. The platform is a separate food business with its own Central e-commerce licence, which does not cover you.
A marketplace seller needs an FSSAI licence for what it actually does (makes, packs, stores or trades), sized by turnover: Registration up to ₹1.5 crore at ₹100 a year, State Licence up to ₹50 crore at ₹5,000, Central above that at ₹7,500. Running your own online food store or platform is e-commerce, which is Central at any turnover.
Which FSSAI licence a online food seller needs.

| Above ₹50 crore | Central Licence | ₹7,500 a year | ₹19,500 |
Per FSSAI’s kind-of-business table updated 01.04.2026. Our fee is one-time plus GST. Operating in two or more States/UTs adds a head-office Central Licence (₹7,500 a year).
What to choose on FoSCoS
- As a seller: the kind of business that describes your actual activity, as listed on FoSCoS — manufacturer, relabeller (you get product made or packed by a third party under your brand), repacker, wholesaler, distributor or retailer — tiered by turnover
- E-Commerce (Central, no turnover threshold): for the platform itself, or for your own website or app that sells food
- Storage, if you keep stock at a separate warehouse premises of your own
Per FSSAI’s table updated 01.04.2026. We confirm your kind of business before filing.
What a online food seller has to get right.
Each point comes with the regulation, order or FSSAI document behind it. Where FSSAI hasn’t spelt something out, we say it’s our reading.
Seller and platform are two different food businesses
FSSAI treats the platform and the seller listed on it as separate food business operators. The platform takes the E-Commerce kind of business, which is Central at any turnover. You take the kind of business for what you do, sized by turnover, and you need a licence or registration of your own.
KOB table 01.04.2026; FSSAI e-commerce advisory 03.12.2024No licence on the listing, no listing
FSSAI's advisory says no e-commerce FBO shall list a seller on its platform without displaying the seller's valid FSSAI licence or registration. Platforms are also encouraged to show sellers' hygiene ratings.
FSSAI e-commerce advisory 03.12.2024Shelf life at the customer's door
Products must reach the customer with at least 30% of their shelf life, or 45 days before expiry, left at the time of delivery. The duty sits with the platform, which is why platforms reject old stock at inbound.
FSSAI e-commerce advisory 03.12.2024The listing is held to the pack's rules
No claim should appear online that isn't substantiated on the product packaging, and platforms must ensure products comply with the Labelling & Display Regulations 2020. A misleading claim or advertisement carries a penalty of up to ₹10 lakh.
FSSAI e-commerce advisory 03.12.2024; FSS Act s.53FSSAI writes to everyone in the chain
FSSAI notices on misleading claims are addressed to every operator at once: manufacturer, marketer, packer and the e-commerce FBO, each with its licence number. A claim on your listing reaches your own licence, not just the platform's.
FSSAI claim notices, 2026 (project: enforcement-notices.md)Your own website or app is e-commerce
E-commerce is buying and selling through the internet, and the E-Commerce kind of business is Central at any turnover. A brand selling through its own site needs that Central Licence even if its factory sits on a Registration.

FSSAI asks e-commerce FBOs to train delivery staff in safe handling, personal hygiene and sanitisation, and to deliver food separately from non-food items to avoid cross-contamination.

It doesn't. The platform's Central Licence covers its own operation. Every seller needs a registration or licence of its own, and the listing has to show it.
A marketplace seller is licensed for its actual activity, by turnover. The E-Commerce kind of business is for the platform or your own online store. That is our reading of the 01.04.2026 table and FSSAI's advisory, which treat the two as separate operators.
A claim in the product title or bullets that the pack doesn't substantiate is exactly what FSSAI's 2024 advisory rules out, and words like 'natural' or '100%' each carry conditions. The penalty for a misleading claim goes up to ₹10 lakh.
A seller registered as a retailer who then has product made under its own brand is now a relabeller. A licence covers only the kinds of business written on it, so a change of model needs a modification.

FSSAI licence for online food seller: questions
Is FSSAI license mandatory for Amazon sellers?
Yes. Anyone selling food on Amazon needs their own FSSAI registration or licence. FSSAI's advisory of 03.12.2024 says no e-commerce FBO shall list a seller without displaying the seller's valid licence or registration. Amazon's own licence covers Amazon's operation, not yours.
Which FSSAI license is required for Amazon in India?
The one that matches what you do and your turnover. If you make, pack or trade food with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore, that's a Registration at ₹100 a year. From ₹1.5 crore to ₹50 crore it's a State Licence at ₹5,000, and above that Central at ₹7,500. Nutraceutical manufacturers and importers are Central at any turnover.
Which FSSAI license is required for Blinkit or Zepto?
The same rule applies on quick-commerce apps. The platform holds its own licence, and you as the brand or seller need a licence for your activity, sized by turnover. Quick commerce adds a practical point. FSSAI expects products delivered with at least 30% of shelf life or 45 days left, so plan your dispatch dates around it.
Do I need an FSSAI license for Meesho?
Yes, if you sell food or beverages on Meesho. The rule doesn't change by platform. Every food seller needs its own FSSAI registration or licence, the platform must display it, and your label must meet the Labelling & Display Regulations. Non-food categories on Meesho are outside FSSAI.
Which FSSAI license is required for an ecommerce business?
It depends which side you are on. Operating the platform, or your own online store that sells food, is the E-Commerce kind of business: a Central Licence at ₹7,500 a year, at any turnover. Selling through someone else's marketplace needs a licence for what you actually do, by turnover. Many D2C brands need both.
Is FSSAI registration enough for online business from home?
Often, yes. A home-based seller who makes or packs food with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore can use a ₹100 Registration for its activity and sell through marketplaces. If you also run your own website or app selling food, that part is e-commerce and needs a Central Licence. Caterers can't use Registration at any turnover.
What must the online listing show?
Your FSSAI licence or registration number, shown by the platform. Beyond that, the listing must not carry claims that the pack doesn't substantiate, and the product must meet the Labelling & Display Regulations 2020. We review listings against the pack so they match.
